Opinion: appearance at art shows

Tue Feb 17, 2009, 3:07 PM
So have any of you had art shows that you participated in and had to market yourself as an artist? How did you portray yourself and your pieces?

A friend had dainty foods on colored glass platters and dishes that matched the mood of her glass pieces.

Some artists will dress in elegant cocktail dresses or sports jackets and some will wear tattered jeans or the Indie uniform of crocheted scarf and hat or screen tees or whatever.

What have you done? Or if you haven't, how do you think you would present yourself as an artist to your collectors/potential clients?

  • Watching: Burn Notice
  • Playing: Rockband
  • Eating: Salad with oranges
  • Drinking: water

When it's formal or when I'm doing portfolio days for art schools, I wear dressy clothes. When it's an art show showcasing my work, I usually wear a nice shirt and jeans. I'm not a person to go out of my way to look different like some artists do. It's about my art, not me. :)

And I'm sure you look very beautiful without trying to look very different. :)

I haven’t but if I were to I imagine it would depend on the situation. If it is a fancy ordeal then I would dress fancy but if it where more casual some nice black slacks and my button up black dress shirt would do nicely maybe even my nice bolo tie to top it off.

Wow. Your version of casual sounds very...sophisticated. Haha.

Okay. I feel like maybe I should add to what I said previously. I've only done two shows after graduating from the university. They both were at different coffee shops. One opening I just had my colleague show up, and the other opening we had finger food and chips and soda, which was weird that they let us do that in a coffee shop, but oh well. And there was live music. I think I wore my typical black blouse/jeans ensemble or I might have worn a skirt, and we bought a guestbook for the occassion, but I don't think I put that much effort into marketing myself since alot of artists I know really make preparing for a show an artform--so it's not really all about one's appearance I think, although people tend to take you more seriously if you look professional enough to know what you're doing. This weekend there will be an art auction and show of my abstracts, which I don't think are portrayed here, but as I'm a big fan of Peter Behren's idea of total design--in other words portraying a style in every aspect of life, I think clothing, food, framing, guestbook, music, and everything involved should create an atmosphere that emphasizes an experience revolving around the actual art itself, so that it is memorable and exciting for all involved. At least those were my favorite type of shows to attend.

I meant less formal oops for a serious casual event I still would go with slacks and probably a polo shirt. I would still want to look presentable in a situation like that.

No I understand. I still think that sounds great. Always pays to look like a professional.

I think the one show I ever did (mind you it was a first friday artwalk thing and I was one of 16 high schoolers in the show) I just dressed nice, but not any fancier then I would on a day where I randomly felt like dressing prettier. We didn't do food because we were high schoolers, and it was already in a coffee shop. If I am ever in a show again, I think maybe I will try and create more cohesion not so much in my work (although that would have been good) but also in the way I present my art and myself.
